On an annual basis, one acre of hemp will produce as much paper as two to four acres of trees. From tissue paper to cardboard, all types of paper products can be produced from hemp. The quality of hemp paper is superior to tree-based paper.
Industrial hemp fiber paper will last hundreds of years without degrading, resists decomposition, doesn’t yellow over time when an acid-free process is used, and requires less toxic chemicals in the manufacturing process than does paper made from trees. Hemp paper can also be recycled more times than wood/tree-based paper.
Hemp can be used to produce fiberboard that is stronger and lighter than wood. Industrial hemp fiberboard produced by Washington State University was found to be twice as strong as the wood based variety. There are no extra resins required due to the naturally-occurring lignin in the material. Substituting hemp fiberboard for timber would further reduce the need to cut down our forests.
