For two decades after the Scottsboro Boys were falsely accused of gang raping two white women they were embattled in the court system of Alabama fighting for their lives . One of the results after years of trials , retrials , convictions and reversals was Southern juries became more open to African Americans . The case is an important early domino in the Civil Rights movement and a glaring representation of the injustices African Americans faced . This button was issued by the International Labor Defense ( ILD ) to help fund the cost of legal defense . The ILD was the legal arm of the Communist party who became involved when the NAACP moved slowly fearing an impact to effectiveness in the face of the sensational charges .
