FEMALE FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE USA COMMUNIST PARTY 1925 LECTURE HANDBILL . 5.5x8.25 ” single sided handbill for a lecture by Rose Pastor Stokes March 30 , 1925 under Auspices / Boston School of Social Science . She was a social activist , writer , birth control advocate and feminist . In 1905 , she married millionaire J . G . Stokes who supported the University Settlement on New York ’ s Lower East Side . The same year they both joined the Socialist Party of America and in Sept . 1905 they joined Upton Sinclair , Jack London , Clarence Darrow and others in founding the Intercollegiate Socialist Society to encourage discussion of socialism on college campuses . Over the next years she traveled the country speaking about the cause and helping to picket , strike and organize for specific events such as the 1909 Shirtwaist Strike . She also organized meetings addressed by birth control advocates Margaret Sanger and Emma Goldman . Her criticism of US involvement in WWI led to an indictment for violating the Espionage Act of 1917 and a 10 year sentence in Missouri State prison . Although the sentence was successfully appealed , she moved further left abandoning the Socialist Party and in 1919 becoming a Communist Party of America founding member .
