Held at Millarden Farms in Woodbury , GA . Portrait of Carter and daughter standing w / mascots in cattle outfits . Text below portrait reads “ Got Beef With Bureaucracy ? Grind It .” This fundraising event just after the 1976 primaries was an effort to “ fatten the presidential campaign coffers ” of the Carter campaign by having cattle farmers donate cattle to be auctioned off to raise money . Unfortunately , according to the Columbus Ledger , the effort was largely unsuccessful , w / the paper reporting : “ Bidding started fairly strong but slackened almost immediately . Many of the Iowa donors ended up bidding on-and buyingthe cattle they had donated , simply to keep prices from hitting bottom .” Despite the failure of this event , Carter went on to easily win the nomination and defeat Gerald Ford in the general election to become the 39th President of the United States .
