The plans for the trip were modified due to inclement weather , and Kennedy addressed the DFL crowd via telephone instead . October 7th was just one week prior to the start of the Cuban Missile Crisis . Only minor wear . NM . John Hillhouse Collection . ( I ) $ 200.00 375 . KENNEDY “ WELCOME TO ILLINOIS OCT . 19 , 1962 ” RIBBON AND TICKET . Ticket is 3x5 ” on stock . Ribbon is 7 ” long . Dated October 19 , 1962 . A few tiny pin holes at top of ribbon , otherwise crisp w / virtually no wear . Only light wear on ticket . Both Exc . Kennedy came to speak to the Illinois crowd to voice his support for Sidney Yates , who was running against Everett Dirksen in the Senate race in the 1962 midterm elections . This visit was also in the midst of the Cuban Missile Crisis . Yates ultimately lost to Everett in that race , but went on to serve in the House for another 33 years , from 1965-1999 .
