1984 , they knew of GW through Truman as the set . Since then our consignor has documented the existence of an Eisenhower c . 1953 and also a JFK c . 1960 but dated “ 1961 ” for his inaugural . PRESIDENTIAL BUTTON SET WASHINGTON THROUGH HOOVER ISSUED C . 1930 BY BUTTON GUM CO . Each is 13 / 16 ” issued as a set of 30 but because of a name error 31 different were produced . The error occurred
122 with Taft who is identified on one as Howard H . Taft and the other as William H . Taft . This is the full set of 31 . These were printed using water soluble inks susceptible to coming off if cleaning is attempted and also susceptible to tiny melt marks if in prolonged contact with glass or even a coin holder w / clear film . Of these 31 : William H . Taft has detail fade at center , 13 have melt marks ( only three on severe side ) and the other 17 are VF to Exc . These came in a Button Gum wrapper w / a slab of gum . Bryan briefly served as a colonel of the 3rd Nebraska Infantry Regiment of volunteers during the Spanish-American War . Ribbon is crisp w / only trivial wear . Cello has only minor wear . He was the owner and publisher of both the Washington Post and the Cincinnati Inquirer . McLean was also co-owner of the Cincinnati Red Stockings professional baseball team , now the Reds . He was active in Democratic politics and was a delegate at the 1884-1900 national party conventions . He was the Democratic nominee for Governor of Ohio in 1899 but was defeated . A few areas of thinness , most notably a diagonal area in the upper right corner , as well as another along left edge just left of Bryan ’ s portrait . Ribbon is bright w / strong contrast . Fine .
