Letterhead features the portraits of the 1844 Whig ticket . Text at top reads “ Huzza ! Huzza ! The Country ’ s Risin .” Dated September 21 , 1844 . The letter , addressed to “ Dear Brother Edward ,” ( Edward Chauncey Allen ) decries the Polk campaign and the Loco Focos , calling Clay ’ s opponents “ loudly in favor of the annexation of Texas and indifferent to the perpetuation of slavery .” The author lauds Clay as a “ southern man but of national feelings .” He similarly praises Freylinghuysen for his eloquence and morality , stating that it is an honor for him to “ aid in elevating a man to one of the highest offices .” Hole on the back page not seen when folded , and a tiny hole on front below “ New York ” beside the date .
