Town councilman Rich Gaver, who also serves as co-chairman of Day in the Park / Battle of Funkstown, says events like that can draw upwards of 3,500 visitors to the small town. Visitors and locals alike are drawn to Funkstown’ s unique mix of antique stores, gift shops, cozy restaurants and bars, salons and more— all of which exude a friendly atmosphere.

TheHighlineRestaurant. com streets— where more than 200 structures representing different architectural styles create a charming downtown atmosphere( and earned the town its spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000). These historic structures house a cordial blend of long-established businesses alongside sprouting enterprises.
Denny and Shawen Warrenfeltz own Roostervane Gardens, a florist shop with a mix of primitive garden wares that has been a Funkstown staple for 19 years. Shopping at Roostervane Gardens is more like choosing a piece of art than simply buying flowers. The shop offers an assortment of items from washboards and buckets to salvaged windowpanes that serve as decorative palettes for personalized, outside-of-the box creations.“ For so long American gardening was functional. You didn’ t see a tremendous amount of ornamental gardening. Now people put in an interesting mix,” Denny says.
Customers seeking one-of-a-kind items can rely on Denny’ s creativity for suggestions on whimsical indoor and outdoor arrangements.
A more recent arrival on the Funkstown scene is merchant Jessica Snyder, who
opened up shop with Guten Tag in 2009. Prior to opening Guten Tag, Jessica showcased vintage items at Valley Antiques and Uniques, a Funkstown antique mall featuring a potpourri of roughly 40 dealers. Her success there sparked a latent desire to open her own store. Coincidently, a location became available right across the street.“ My kids went to school in Funkstown and I was driving by it,” Jessica says of the small brick structure that now houses her business. The circa-1850s building that once served as a horse stable sets a distinctive backdrop for her imaginative merchandise themed with rustic cottage charm. Besides just selling items for home décor, Jessica offers customers the option to bring pieces back to the store where she updates them, creating designs relevant to various seasons.
Loyal repeat visitors who shop in Funkstown feel more like friends than customers, Jessica says, and Funkstown has been a welcoming location to her cheerfully named establishment. Guten Tag, German for“ good day,” is both literally and figuratively what guests can expect when they visit Funkstown. §
