someone in Kentucky.” His new solo album,“ Up and Down,” was recorded in his home studio and mastered at Echoes Recording Studio in Sharpsburg. Rich has made it available for download on iTunes.
And, both Rich and Paul share the same passion for philanthropy. For four years after his dad was diagnosed with cancer, Rich organized a benefit concert for Meritus Health’ s John R. Marsh Cancer Center dubbed“ Summer Bash.” These outdoor events were sponsored by local businesses, and all proceeds benefitted the fund established by John and Kitty Dayhoff to help benefit uninsured
cancer patients being treated there. Rich’ s father passed away in May 2002, but the event left a lasting impression.“ My Dad and I played together onstage the first two years, and we raised approximately $ 10,000.”
Encouraged by Paul, PRS employees participate in fundraisers for local causes.“ God yes!” Paul exclaims.“ We give back big time. We do a lot of philanthropic work here. Why? It’ s our home, it’ s where we live.” That dedication to place is also why Paul has chosen to keep PRS in Maryland over the years, despite the fluctuations in humidity that affect the materials they use.“ This is my home. It’ s
not any more complicated than that.”
Ultimately, Paul Reed Smith and Rich Hannon are kindred spirits— musicians, music lovers, craftsmen, philanthropists— men who care about their work, their community and their principles. Paul speculates on why Rich is so dedicated to his craft.“ I don’ t know, you ask him that. Actually I have an idea.” You do?“ Sure, it’ s because music’ s in his family. It’ s in his bones.( Working here) gives him a chance to have an impact on things in a different way.” Rich smiles,“ I’ m a guitar player working for one of the most respected guitar companies in the world.” §
