Maxine Dingell has suffered two bouts of vertigo— the second of which was accompanied by hot flashes, elevated blood sugar and an inability to walk straight that prompted her doctors to order a CAT scan and an MRI.

From July 1, 2011 to July 30 of this year, 58 people were seen in the Meritus emergency room with a diagnosis of vertigo, some of whom were released the same day, others held for a time for observation, and 11 of that number were admitted to the hospital for care. Nearly 2,000 other patients experienced dizziness, which was not confirmed as vertigo. Symptoms of other conditions— including heart problems, osteoarthritis or even migraine headaches— often complicate a vertigo diagnosis, but true vertigo is caused by a disruption of the vestibular system.“ This has three parts,” says Dr. DeCriscio,“ the visual system( brain), the inner ear( vestibular) and proprioception,”( the receptors in our muscles, joints and skin that inform our brain about the position of our body relative to our environment).“ The brain stem and eventually the higher centers of the brain receive input from these three systems and turn the signals into motor commands to stabilize vision and maintain balance using the muscles in the body.
