about modes and scales. He stud-
ied with a private teacher. He
opened his own teaching dojo. In all of this
George Lynch reminds me of Randy Rhoads,
another great player always in search of his
next creative spark. Lynch explained it saying,
“Thirty years ago I would really stress over the

fact that I hadn’t played for a few days and my
chops weren’t up. I would hear something on
the radio, some other guitarist and go oh my
god I’m losing it. I’ve got to get back and keep
progressing daily. Of course that was back in
an era when things were a lot more compet-
itive individually among guitarists. Guitarists
were kind of the helmsmen of the band. Now
