MESSAGE FROM THE COLLEGE PRESIDENT
“ Here in Singapore , UWCSEA has a unique history : as we build this year on the impact of our work of 50 years , and as our alumni go out into the world in increasing numbers , we have much to celebrate and much to look forward to . We are a united , welcoming community that embraces students and their families from almost 100 different nations . The second member of the global UWC movement , the College was opened by Lee Kuan Yew as Singapore International School in 1971 and has gradually expanded to become the K – 12 international school of over 5,600 students across two campuses that it is today .
The intentional diversity in our community created by our student admissions and staff recruitment policies adds much to the learning environment and outcomes for our students : diversity and inclusion increases the richness of ideas , it creates an internationalist mindset and , most importantly , it builds deep understanding and respect for others . Our students and staff are encouraged to investigate and value their own different histories and talents , as well as those of other people and cultures .
Our community , while large , celebrates and builds on the success of individuals , with an aim to create a wider impact by equipping our students with the skills , knowledge , personal drive and sense of committed responsibility so that they will continue to find ways to enact our mission throughout their lives . UWCSEA embodies everything the UWC movement stands for : concern and compassion for others , the willingness to accept responsibility , and tenacity in pursuit of social justice .
What also distinguishes our community is how much they give service to others : their compassion and commitment are writ large in the many hundreds of impactful connections the College community creates every year , across a hugely diverse range of activities , and which we celebrate as much as our academic achievements . As both the starting point and the end goal of a UWCSEA education , our mission to unite people , nations and cultures guides every decision we make as we strive to ready the students in our College to embrace challenges beyond school , and to take responsibility for shaping a better , more sustainable , world .
