Historic Downtown Garner
Historic Downtown Garner continues to see major progress in its revitalization , cementing its status as the heart of our community .
The Garner Recreation Center , located at the corner of Main and Montague Streets , opened in August 2021 and has generated plenty of new activity downtown . The 40,000-square-foot center features three high school-size gymnasiums , an elevated indoor walking track , and multipurpose , fitness and art rooms . The campus also has an outdoor walking path and a lawn area that serves as a space for special holiday events and free outdoor movies . In November 2021 , the Garner History Museum at the Depot , located at the corner of Pearl and West Main Streets , opened its doors . The museum offers a fascinating look at our town ’ s past and gives folks one more reason to visit Downtown ( see callout for more information ).
The Town is moving forward with the Lansing Melbourne Group ( LMG ) as developer of a publicprivate venture adjacent to the Garner Recreation Center . The decision to work with LMG was the culmination of an almost two-year process of working with the UNC School of Government ’ s Development Finance Initiative to complete pre-development analysis and solicit developer interest for the property .
