BÉZIERS
Béziers, world wine capital
Having escaped the phylloxera wine blight, from 1863 Béziers supplied
the whole of France with wine. This was Béziers’ golden age; it became
the richest town in Languedoc.
Rich men built private mansions and wine châteaux.
The railway, the Allées Paul-Riquet, the Jardin des Poètes,
the arena and the theatre were all built at around this time.
