Domaine de
QUERELLE
LOVE OF THE LAND
“Wine must be respected”.That is how Michel Abel, owner of the
Domaine du Querelle gets into the subject.
An independent wine grower since forever,
as were his father and grandfather, he pro-
duces his wines with quality in mind. It must
be said the terroir where his 15 hectares of
vines grow is remarkable. In fact, the do-
maine’s name is a clue to its uniqueness.
‘Querelle’ comes from the Occitan word
“Cairas”, meaning rocky place.
In addition to the beneficial influence of
the sea, the vines which overlook it are
planted on terraces, the soil consisting of
rolled pebbles. Aside from an IGP white,
all the other Querelle wines are Coteaux
du Languedoc AOCs.
GLOSSARY
Layering
A vine reproduction technique which
consists of planting a vine shoot which
will take root and reproduce a new plant
with the same characteristics as the
parent vine stock.

OENOLOGISTS
IN WHICH ORDER SHOULD WINE BE SERVED?
IT’S A QUESTION OF COMMON SENSE!
Chilled wines are served before room tempera-
ture wines, young wines before older wines, light
wines are served before more full-bodied wines,
white wine before red...
Michael’s wish is that the “Fonseranes” de-
nomination, which he fervently defends, will
soon be approved by the INAO, achieving
recognition for the uniqueness of the ter-
roir that produces these excellent wines.
Moreover, Michael’s preferred wine is his
high-quality red, the “Sousmestre”, which
means “layering” in Occitan, a technique
which allows a parent stock to produce a
new branch, a bit like a symbol of the lon-
gevity of this line of winegrowers.
It has featured in the Hachette Wine Guide
for the last 9 years, a proof of quality. The
Domaine de Querelle has just recently
joined the France Passion network to host
campervanners, who are of course also
delighted to taste the wines on offer in the
recently created winery shop. Discovering
the vines with the Mediterranean as your
backdrop is definitely worth a detour.
