Tenacious Teamwork
Tom Hyeon Jik Kim attempts to spike the ball
during practice. Spiking is important in volleyball as is it an offensive move that can score
devastating points on the opponent.
Boys and Girls Volleyball
Amidst the
training done to
hone skills and techniques, it is easy for players to
forget about the importance of team
bonding. Especially in a team sport like
volleyball, it is important that players
maintain a healthy relationship with one
another.
“This season, I think the team
learned teamwork. We didn’t go out of
school to hang out, but we trusted each
other on the court because we practiced
so well together,” said Brian Bae, eighth grad-
er.
Brian expressed that the team had an interesting mix of students who joined volleyball just
to follow their friends into a sport. Brian said
that because of this mix, the players in the team
were already fairly familiar with one another.
Derrick Han, eighth grader, said that he
didn’t see team bonding and trust as being just
with his good friends, but rather he was able
to “trust the other player’s skill” and “watching
[out] for them when playing.”
Derrick said that volleyball required a lot of
calling [yelling out ‘mine’ to alert teammates
that the ball will be received] which meant
that if there was no trust, one person would
constantly be calling the ball. “I personally feel
relaxed more when I trust my teammates
to get the ball,” commented Derrick. “There’s
less pressure on you.”
Derrick also said that volleyball is a sport
where the ball needs to be handled on the
team’s side of the court before being strategically given back to the opponent’s side. He
explained that if there isn’t trust when other
teammates are handling the ball, then it becomes easier to “mess up handling the ball
since you are so nervous.”

I joined volleyball
because my mom did
it and I tried to inspire
other students to join
volleyball as well.
Brad Uhm

I joined volleyball to
follow my friends. I
