1966 AND ALL THAT
With sixteen teams competing in 1966, eight venues were chosen, spread across four geographical regions. Of those selected, Wembley (1923) was the youngest, and Goodison
Park (1892), the oldest. Three other grounds dated from the 19th century: Villa Park
(1897), Roker Park (1898) and Hillsborough (1899), while Ayresome Park (1903), White
City (1908) and Old Trafford (1910) had come into the world not long afterwards. In addition to the £500,000 grant made available by the government, interest free loans towards
the cost of ground and infrastructure improvements were forthcoming from the Football
Association.
