The Editorial . . .
T
he debate on the reintroduction of standing
areas in football grounds has really been in the
public domain since it was featured heavily at
the end of last year (including by us in GT23).
Kate Hoey, Minister for Sport, has lent her support to
the efforts of SAFE and others behind the campaign and
several thousand words have been printed and spoken
on the issue by the media. A real test of whether terraces will ever be considered safe enough for the large
crowds attracted to the Premier League grounds in this
country may come next season when Fulham should
take their place in the game’s elite set. Assuming they
stay put at Craven Cottage for at least part of the season (notwithstanding rumours of ground shares etc), the
sight of large banks of standing fans at big games will
again be seen on a regular basis. The behaviour and
safety of those at Craven Cottage may go a long way to
deciding the debate either way.
The debacle of the new National Stadium on the site of
Wembley is now a national disgrace. Groundtastic has
long supported the need for a new stadium that this
country could be proud of but we have always questioned the need to build it on the site of the most famous
stadium in the world. Since the old ground closed in
October the plans for its replacement have been a series of on-off arguments about the inclusion of athletics
and funding. This has led to a delay in any real work
commencing on the site, and at present the Twin Towers still stand.
Finally, just a quick word to thank all of those that contacted us with kind comments after the facelift introduced by GT23. The new glossy look has gone down a
storm and sales are going well. It’s good to know that
the long hours spent putting it together are appreciated
out there!
Our next fixture is June 2001
