Locked Out
The daunting approach to the away end at The Den

In tune with the era, the intimidating nature of some grounds was a consistent theme,
with the most comments reserved for visits to Millwall’s Den. One of the pictures we
used was of the narrow alley leading from Cold Blow Lane to the away turnstiles. The
walk through here was often approached with trepidation, with a few comments detailing
how objects often used to be thrown over the walls at away supporters, including a Bosch
washing machine. Portsmouth fan John Ellis recalled ending up with a dart in the side of
his head in the late 1980s. On the flip side, The Den was also one of the grounds that fans
seem to miss the most, with Mike Floate even saying it was second only to his beloved
Vetch Field on his ‘grounds I would time travel to’ list.
