10 18 IDENTITY “Who am I?” It’s both the simplest and most complex question we can ask ourselves, one that is seemingly shaped by an endless number of factors beyond our control. This issue examines the concept of identity through multiple lenses and the ways in which we develop, display, challenge, and change who we are. 10 Departure Gate A childhood move transformed Chris Allsop from a California dude to a British bloke. Here, he explores how navigating other cultures – whether for a few months or a few years – can bring out hidden aspects of our personalities and allow us to see our native country with fresh eyes. 14 Make Your Mark Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIn, oh, my! Developing a professional digital brand that’s both consistent and versatile can be a daunting task. This practical guide provides the dos and don’ts of presenting yourself to the world online. 18 The Reborn Identity For four Antioch University alumni, personal struggles led to metaphysical makeovers. Their journeys illustrate the sometimes-rocky road to finding our authentic selves and the ultimate peace that self-discovery can bring. 26 Eve, Evolving The battle for equality in the workplace is being waged on many fronts. Women today are proactively combating the harmful effects of internalized gender bias – in themselves and others – to help empower women to lead and succeed. Have feedback about Groundswell? J0953_GroundswellR.indd 3 FROM THE EDITOR In planning this second issue of Groundswell, we decided to bring you not only stories about AULA and people and organizations we admire, but to also feature Antioch University’s other campuses and programs. It seemed an appropriate tribute to our “one university” system, and would offer a peek into what’s happening in distant locations around the country and even overseas. But I soon found that any distinction I’d made between AULA stories versus “other” stories vanished. Pick an article, any article, and I’ll wager that the people and programs it describes feel instantly familiar. A certificate program to empower women in leadership? Sounds like Antioch University. An alumnus championing safety in schools? Yup, that’s Antioch University. An alumna who founded a counseling center to help others heal? Yeah, that pretty much screams “Antioch University!” These particular stories come from Santa Barbara, Midwest, and New England, respectively, but I believe that the values they represent speak to – and for – all of us. As you read this issue, I hope you share my tremendous pride in being part of the Antioch University family. We may have different campuses, offer different degrees, and enjoy different weather (ahem), yet we have the same crucial mission to advance social, economic, and environmental justice. This mission is carried out every day by the exceptional individuals who have made Antioch University a part of their lives. Want to know how they do it? Read on… Warmly, Sara Ring Editor 12/18/13 11:17 AM
