Turning off on the road toward Middelburg in the Eastern Cape onto the farm road that leads to Dwarsvlei, we pass through an impressive entrance, with the road covered in what looks like slaked lime to prevent the further spread of foot-and-mouth disease( FMD). It is an immediate indication of farmers cognisant of the potential challenges facing them. We feel safe and in good hands.
