TEES SMALL BOATS HEAD Grey College descended upon a sunny Stockton in force to compete in the first race of the 2016-17 season. This year marked the return of pre-season training for the club with a good turn out from both the men’ s and women’ s squad. With some superb coxing from our new novice cox, Luke Myers, the men’ s IM3 4 + was able to win the category. A fantastic feeling especially having watched Hatfield crash and burn. The men’ s Nov 4 + gave the men’ s squad a double victory for the day also winning their category – an impressive feat considering they were coxed by our very own 80 kg + David Drury. Note: this is also Dave’ s first GCBC win, congratulations!

windy and choppy conditions that the River Tyne likes to throw at rowers and finished much closer to the IM3 4 + than at Tees. Finally, Will Hamlyn completely disproved the( jokey) men’ s captain’ s bets that he would fall in and completed the course in a very respectable time. A fantastic achievement having only learnt to scull just under 3 months ago.
Results were more positive from the women’ s squad. The 1st women’ s IM3 4 + making waves by winning their race. The 2nd IM3 4 + coming over the finish line looked completely drained, the entire crew had put their all into that race!
DURHAM AUTUMN SMALL BOATS HEAD The wet weather didn’ t dampen the spirits of GCBC’ s men’ s and women’ s squads as they took to the Wear to race on home water. From the men’ s squad, the IM3 4 + made a flying start and were impeded by a small‘ bump’ with a schoolgirls quad and St. Johns CBC before Elvet. Despite Hatfield winning the category, the boat managed a top 10 finish of all boats. Coxed by Natasha, the Nov 4 + also raced well,‘ quite splashy’ as quoted by Joe Woodward but still managed to only lose to the winners St. Cuthbert’ s by only a couple of secs. However, they thrashed Hatfield to continue our newfound rivalry.

The three women’ s crews did well in their races. After only competing in sprint races last term, the ex-fresher women showed magnificent energy in competing in their first head race( 5 km). It was not only sweeping where Grey dominated, Beth Pevsner and Ellen Lockstone rowed flawlessly to take home the victory in the IM3 double sculls. Overall, an impressive start to the term.
There were also 2 women’ s crews out racing. Congratulations to the women’ s IM3 4 + who were fastest in their category and are unbeaten so far this season! The Nov 4 + followed racing very
TYNE UNITED SMALL BOATS HEAD Despite the cold and miserable weather at a rather bleak Tyne, there was yet another strong GCBC presence at Newburn with 5 crews entered to race. The men’ s IM3 4 + were looking to once again beat Hatfield in their category but unfortunately could not find a decent rhythm and lost to much stronger looking Hatfield and Aidan’ s crews. The men’ s Nov 4 + rowed well in the
