Your problem could be due to poor or aging insulation! The Department of Energy says insulation lowers heating and cooling costs, so I sat down with Carter Ward, owner of Ward Insulation, to learn more. “What we see most is either older insulation that has settled or worn down over time, and small leaks at joints due to a lack of air sealing. Those things together add up to a lot of energy lost, so your home is losing money heating or cooling itself over and over,” Ward said. The solution? Air sealing and additional insulation, to help create what’s called a thermal envelope around your home. but a home can lose up to 70% of its conditioned air through the attic alone, so the savings are usually pretty substantial—and you start to see that money back almost right away.” So how do you know if your home needs new insulation? “The best thing to do is have someone who knows insulation come out and take a look. They can show you what thickness your insulation is, as well as show you drafts and the gaps that may be causing them.
