One of the most visible tributes to this musical legacy stands proudly on the Henderson County Courthouse Square, a fiddler frozen in time, bow poised and ready, as though the next tune might begin at any moment. The statue was created in 1986 as part of Henderson County’ s sesquicentennial celebration, honoring the musicians whose talent and dedication had shaped the long history of the reunion. Over the years, it has become far more than a piece of public art; it is a symbol of Athens’ cultural heritage and the deep roots of music within the community.
The sculpture was the work of renowned American artist Albert Stewart, who taught at Trinity Valley Community College at the time. Known for his ability to capture movement and character, Stewart first formed“ The Fiddler” in clay, finishing it with a permanent glaze and epoxy coating. His work has been documented in the archives of the Smithsonian Institute, placing the Athens statue within a broader legacy of American sculpture.
The figure itself is both simple and meaningful— a seated man holding his fiddle, balanced atop a pyramid of bricks. The base seems to suggest the very foundation of the community, built piece by piece through generations of shared history, music, and tradition. Installed on the southwest side of the courthouse square, the statue quickly became a recognizable landmark. During each Athens Old Fiddlers Reunion, it stands front and center, not only as a tribute to performers of the past but also as a gathering point for the present, a place where photos are taken, stories are shared, and memories begin.
Time, however, leaves its mark on even the most beloved symbols. By 2018, members of the Henderson County Arts Council noticed that the statue was beginning to deteriorate. Determined to preserve what had become such an important part of the community’ s identity, they launched the“ Save the Fiddler” cam-
