Strong sailing season The 2017 Scotch sailing season has arguably been the strongest performing year since the sport’s introduction. Our boys experienced some significant highs, with the senior team finishing in first position to win the Victorian School Team Sailing Championships, held at St Kilda Royal Yacht Squadron from 23 to 25 March. The Scotch team followed this huge achievement with a strong performance at the nationals, held at the Nedlands Sailing Club in Perth during the Term 2 holidays, finishing in a creditable 17th position. Amazingly, we had three sets of brothers representing Scotch – Lachlan (Year 10) and Joshua Copeland (Year 12), Finn (Year 11) and Lachie Hartnett (Year 9) and Henry (Year 10) and Thomas Johnston (Year 7). The boys won five of the 12 rounds over the five days of sailing, and fell just one win short of competing in the finals. As a young team, the boys are hopeful of further opportunities at this level, and benefited greatly from the experience. Huge thanks must go to the TICs and coaches – Mr Mark Williams, Ms Amy Christensen, Will Llewelyn (‘11), and George Davies (‘12) – for their support of the boys and the sailing program at Scotch throughout the season. Our current Captain of Sailing, Hugo Llewelyn (Year 12), and former team member Nick Joel (Year 10) have also been achieving great things away from the school program, and were recently awarded the 2017 youth sailors of the year at the Victorian Sailing Awards. This award capped off a great season for the boys, who competed in the international 420 class, with results including first place in the Victorian state championships, first place in the Sailing World Club in Melbourne, and second place in the Australian national youth championships. (They were the first placed Victorians.) The boys also qualified to represent Australia in 2016 at the 420 world championships in San Remo, Italy.
