Senior School Sport ABOVE: WILL SUTHERLAND AND JOEL GARNER (BOTH YEAR 12) WITH TOBY WOOLLER (’16) AT THE AFL UNDER 18 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. A Scotch presence in AFL under 18 championships Two Scotch boys – Joel Garner (Year 12) and Will Suther land (Year 12) – and Old Boy Toby Wooller (’16) were selected to represent Vic Metro in the AFL national under 18 championships, held in June and July. All three represented their state with great distinction. Joel Garner, who is Scotch’s Captain of Football, was also appointed Captain of the state team; an outstanding achievement. Toby Wooller plays for the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC under 18 competition. Will Sutherland (Year 12) was selected in the team despite not playing in the TAC competition, and shortly after the championships announced that he had selected cricket as his chosen sport. ‘This was an incredibly tough decision.,’ Will said. ‘Most of the advice that I received was just to 56 follow my passion. That sounds easy enough, but not so much when my passion is for both sports. I really loved my experience in the recent under 18 national championships when representing Vic Metro, and this only made the decision more difficult. ‘When it came down to it, my love and passion for the game of cricket just won out. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed representing my state and country in the under-age ranks and the prospect of potentially being able to continue this at the senior level is very much my dream. ‘I’m excited and relieved about this decision, and will now look to focus on completing my Year 12 studies.’ STUART POWELL – DIRECTOR OF SPORT “Most of the advice that I received was just to follow my passion. That sounds easy enough, but not so much when my passion is for both sports.” Great Scot Number 151– September 2017
