Metamorphoses –
challenging but enjoyable
The thing I love about school productions is
that every play is not only fun, but it also challenges
the cast and crew in unique and interesting ways.
This year’s Scotch and PLC Year 9/10
production of Metamorphoses by Mary
Zimmerman was no different. Instead of having
a through-line story with only a few main
characters, the play was split into seven different
vignettes, each portraying Greek myths about the
interactions between gods and men.
The format of the play challenged the cast, as
it meant that most of us hadn’t seen the entire play
until close to production week. However this also
meant that each rehearsal was dedicated to one
individual scene, enabling us to focus on making
our characters incredibly special and unique.
The play’s structure meant that our first full cast
rehearsal was late in the process. This is always a
nerve-racking time and the tension runs high. As
usual, Mr Waugh got us to gather in a circle. We
were then tasked with saying aloud our names and
the characters we were playing.
Being first up, Sam Hobson had a difficult
task. Should he characteristically make a joke or
just state his name and character and then move
48
on? ‘Hi. I’m Sam Hobson and I’ve been alcohol
free for three months’ he said. Laughter erupted
throughout the Cramond Studio. I can’t thank Sam
enough for breaking the ice and for setting the
atmosphere that was carried through every single
rehearsal from that point on.
Once production week rolled around, we were
extremely nervous. We couldn’t wait to show all
of our friends and families what we had come up
with. Fortunately, the vibe that had been created by
the cast and crew throughout our rehearsals kept
us at ease.
While I love perf orming on stage, I also cherish
what goes on behind the scenes: getting our
make-up on in the crucible, the pre-play warm-
ups, reciting our favourite lines from the play. It all
comes together to forge an experience that I know
the whole cast and crew will never forget.
