A successful week with our Tiwi College friends
As part of Scotch’s Indigenous Partnership
Program, during Term 2 we hosted 16 boys and
four teachers from Tiwi College, Melville Island,
in the Northern Territory. Our longstanding
partnership with Tiwi College is built on friendship
and respect.
During their week in Melbourne, the boys
were billeted with Year 8 families, and attended
classes at Scotch with their hosts. In a busy
week, they attended the Dreamtime Match at
the MCG, visited Richmond and Melbourne
Football Clubs, the Melbourne Indigenous
Transition School, the Korin Gamadji Institute
and the National Sports Museum at the MCG
(where they also enjoyed a ground tour), and met
the Governor and Kevin Sheedy at Government
House.
The leaf smoking ceremony in Memorial Hall
and at the Thank You Dinner by the Yarra were
both memorable occasions.
Each morning, as the boys arrived at Scotch
with their hosts, it was lovely to see so many
boys happily chatting, laughing and kicking a
ball on the Main Oval. The visit concluded with
the annual Tiwi versus Scotch football match,
attracting a crowd comparable to the Cordner-
Eggleston Cup, which was this year won by
Scotch College, before the boys returned to the
warmth of Darwin the next day.
Scotch teachers worked side by side
with Aaron, Lennie, Benita and Tim to ensure
the success of the week in Melbourne. As
always, the boys brought added cheer, energy,
enthusiasm, love and laughter to the Quad, and
we were sad to see them leave.
Special thanks go to the nine families who
generously hosted the boys, some for the
second time, and to the 80 Year 8 ‘class buddies’
who looked after our friends so well. A group of
senior Scotch boys will travel to Tiwi College in
September as part of the Indigenous Partnership
Program.
