Photographs of Scotchies
wanted by the Archives
This magnificent photograph of the sons of Old
Boy John Merton Head (born 29 December 1917,
SC 1933, died 30 April 1992) was recently brought
in by his son John for scanning by the Archives.
From the left they are David (SC 1963-68, Anglican
minister), Peter (SC 1962-67; rear, hospital
scientist), Roger (SC 1969-74; front, accountant)
and John (SC 1960-64, public servant, who later
ran his own business).
This photo was probably taken in 1964, and
it is amusing to note that Roger did not start at
Scotch until 1969. John explained that their mother
wanted them all in Scotch uniform for the photo,
and evidently she could not wait!
Many Scotchies’ families have proudly
taken photographs of their son or sons on

their first day at Scotch, or with their brother(s),
whether in front of the family home, at Scotch,
or in a photographer’s studio. A number of these
photographs have been donated to the Archives,
while others have been brought in for scanning as
the family wants to keep the original.
From 1964 Scotch began taking portrait
photographs of boys for their student record,
although some escaped the photographer’s lens.
Prior to 1964 photographs of Scotch boys typically
only exist if they were published in The Scotch
Collegian – often in large group photographs in
which they are too small to extract a publishable
portrait photograph. If a boy did not distinguish
himself at Scotch and earn himself a picture in the
Collegian it is unlikely Archives has an image of
him.
Donations of such photographs of Scotch boys
are sought by the Archives, or else the opportunity
to scan them. If your relative attended Scotch in
the 19th or early 20th century, any photographs of
them would be welcomed.
