OSMaD CAST AND CREW OF THE MULTI-AWARD WINNING OSMAD PRODUCTION, MISS SAIGON OSMaD’S MISS SAIGON EARNS 10 MUSIC THEATRE GUILD AWARDS An excellent production greatly impresses the judges Audiences at last year’s Old Scotch Music and Drama Club production of Miss Saigon acclaimed it as one of the best-ever OSMaD shows – it was superb, professional musical theatre presented by a highly talented and dedicated amateur company. And it appears our audiences were not the only ones enraptured by OSMaD’s Miss Saigon. The production won a total of 10 Music Theatre Guild of Victoria ‘Lyrebird’ Awards, including best music direction and best male performer in a leading role. The production also picked up Lyrebird Awards for best set in a musical or variety over $30,000, best ensemble in a musical, best supporting actor in a musical, best actress in a musical, best actor in a musical, best musical director in a musical, best director in a musical, and best production – musical. Miss Saigon involved an extremely talented and large cast and orchestra. To handle such a large group and harness their immense talent was a major challenge. But the outcome was magnificent, and so it’s important to acknowledge the hard work of the creative team and the committee. Amy Bryans (Director), Tim Verdon (Musical Director), Kristy Griffin (Choreographer), Curtis Mason (Assistant Director), Ned Dixon (Assistant Musical Director), Bryce Dunn (Assistant Choreographer), Richard Perdriau (Set Designer), Vanessa Burke (Lighting Designer), Louise Parson (Costume Designer), Tristan Laurence (Production Manager) and David Barrell (’11 – Stage Manager) produced a remarkable outcome for the 2019 season, and are to be commended for the remarkable production they, the cast and the backstage crew achieved. We particularly wish to thank Cherine Peck, our 2019 Patron, who among many achievements in an inspiring career was a cast member in Miss Saigon’s Australian premiere at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre. The OSMaD community was inspired and enriched by every interaction with Cherine. We were once again strongly supported by OSCA and Scotch College, without whom we would not be able to produce the calibre of production we strive for and present. We wish to acknowledge and thank School Principal Tom Batty, along with Scott Montgomery (‘85), Annika Dusek, Julie-Anne Mayer, Hayley Sandpearl, John Ferguson, Jamie Lane, Alannah Brelis and Jude Hallum. OSMaD also congratulates Jan Goldsmith on her very well deserved OSCA Merit Award. (See page 62 of this edition.) We sincerely thank Jan for being one of the reasons so many people want to return to OSMaD. A great production of the standard we strive for requires a mammoth team effort. More than 100 people were involved in this year’s production, including Old Scotch Collegians Donald McDonald (‘63), Richard Beveridge (‘62), Ben Andrews (‘06), David Barrell (‘11), Tom Goodwin (‘11), and Chris Richards (‘13). A current Scotch boy, Marcus Cheng (Prep) played the role of Tam. Because of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, with great regret OSMaD has had to cancel this year’s production. Go to osmad.com.au for more information, or keep up to date on the OSMaD Facebook page. Finally, we congratulate and welcome our 2020 committee members: Katherine McDonald (President), Damien Calvert (Vice President), Tristan Lawrence (Treasurer), David Barrell (’11 – Secretary), and Amy Calvert, Ben Andrews (’06), Chris Richards (’13), Donald McDonald (’63), Jan Goldsmith, Lucy Mason, Matthew Nutley, Richard Beveridge (’62), Ros Turnley, Suzi Cossar and Tim Minturn (general committee).
