Sunday 15 December was warm and
sunny – a perfect day to celebrate the Old
Scotch Bushwalking Club’s 25th anniversary.
To mark the occasion, we staged a gala
dinner in the Boykett Room at Scotch for
which 69 club members and past members
booked to attend.
We began the evening with a stroll around
the school ably led by OSCA Executive
Director, Scott Montgomery ('85), who
regaled us with a lot of history about school
buildings old and new. After the tour we
met upstairs in the Boykett Room to enjoy
drinks and canapes before sitting down to a
delicious three-course dinner.
After the main course, the club President,
David Ashton ('65) spoke about the history
of our club, spicing his speech with
anecdotes about some of the people and
places we have encountered during the past
quarter-century. A cake-cutting ceremony
after dessert was shared by four of our five
Presidents.
Throughout the evening we were also
entertained by a slide show featuring photos
taken over the years by our former President,
Norrie McLeod ('59). Thanks must go to
Helen Hunwick for organising the beautiful
table arrangements, helped by Christine and
Layton Moss. The evening was voted a great
success, and it was especially pleasing to
see so many ‘old’ faces from previous years.
At the club’s 2020 annual general
meeting in March, outgoing President David
Ashton became the club’s first honorary life
member. David has served on the committee
since the club’s inception, has had two
periods as President, and edits Tracknotes,
our quarterly publication. Laurine Symington
succeeded David as club President.

GREAT BOWLS IN A FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE
On 11 March the Old Scotch
Bowls Club played a special warm-up
match against Old Melburnians as
the club prepared to host the major
tournament of the year – the 47th APS
Past Students’ Bowls Association
Tournament, scheduled for 29 March,
78
which unfortunately had to be cancelled
because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This annual tournament for the Sir James
Darling Trophy is always the major highlight
on the APS bowling calendar. The match is
played in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere but
with great determination to win the trophy
and be crowned the champion APS club for
the year. The Old Scotch Bowls Club offers
Scotch Family members – men and
women – an opportunity to enjoy bowling
and socialising in a relaxed and informal
atmosphere. During February we
welcomed two new members to our
club: Elizabeth Howcroft, a past Scotch
parent, and David Ferguson (‘56),
both new to bowling but both having
lessons and enjoying the experience,
while socialising with fellow Scotch Family
members.
If you’re retired or about to retire and
you’re looking to develop a new interest
while enjoying the friendship of like-minded
individuals, bowls with the strong and
friendly Old Scotch Bowls Club could be for
you. Scotch Family members who belong to
other bowling clubs are also most welcome
to join our club.
