MOVIE ON THE MAIN – entertaining, and raising funds for bushfire relief On the crisp, cool evening of Friday 21 February, the lush turf of Scotch’s Main Oval became an outdoor cinema for one night, as the Scotch Family gathered to watch a movie under the stars, beamed on the LED scoreboard. Movie on the Main was an initiative of Scotch’s Prefects, under School Captain, William Dixon, aiming to raise funds to support those affected by the tragic bushfires over the summer. Some of our boarders are from country areas, and so the decision was made to support BlazeAid, a volunteer-based organisation that works with families and individuals in rural Australia after natural disasters, such as fires and floods. BlazeAid began in response to the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. Working alongside those in need, volunteers help to rebuild fences and other structures that have been damaged or destroyed. For example, in the East Gippsland RELAXING COMFORTABLY ON THE MAIN OVAL AS BLINDED BY THE LIGHT IS BEAMED ON THE SCOREBOARD area alone, more than 60,000km of fencing was destroyed. Some Scotch families have volunteered to help in this work. The movie screened on the Main was Blinded by the Light, which tells the story of a British-Pakistani teenager navigating his way through school, while trying to keep his parents happy. Set in the bleak ‘80s, the teenager finds direction for his life through the music and lyrics of Bruce Springsteen. Over 300 tickets were sold, and more than $7000 was raised. Those who attended enjoyed an evening reclining on the beautifully manicured Main Oval, watching the screening on the LED scoreboard with clear amplification, while snacking on picnics, popcorn, barbecued sausages and hot pies. It was a great opportunity for the Scotch Family to come together, be entertained, and raise money for a worthwhile cause. DAVID BROWN – DEAN OF STUDENTS www.scotch.vic.edu.au Great Scot 39
