The risk is the rigours of complying with mandated curriculum requirements and compliance have meant education has become less human , with a focus on economic and technological outcomes , rather than providing a more authentic education focused on finding purpose , meaning , self-worth and truth .
We also know over the past 20 years that we have lost the rich legacy of many forms of educational practice to an increasingly standardised and homogenous educational system that focuses on ‘ transferable skills ’, often over the prioritisation of disciplinary mastery and deep immersion in a subject . It seems entirely logical that the rise in mental health issues , loneliness and loss of meaning is linked to the trends and shift in educational practice , and that addressing the problems requires a focus back on how we think about developing character and values we hold dear .
As part of the new strategy , consideration has been given to how we can better espouse our values and guiding beliefs .
There will be separate initiatives and actions that support these high-level aspirations , along with a detailed operating plan and property development masterplan .
A re-emphasis on the importance of service and developing an outdoor immersion program at the recently-acquired Mallacoota site , are two of many initiatives currently planned .
It is important to stress that the strategic plan is designed to set the direction for the school ; the route will evolve and develop .
As has been the case at Scotch , this will emerge through the proactive interchange of ideas united by a shared belief in doing what is best for our boys and the interests of the College .
The plan should therefore be seen as an invitation to engage and join in the strategic aspirations of the College , as we collectively look to advance Scotch and strengthen the Cardinal Thread for the glory of God , for the good of our country , and for the advancement of learning – Deo Patriae Litteris .
