CHAIRMAN

ENLIGHTENING BOYS TO SHAPE A BETTER FUTURE

MR HAMISH TADGELL (' 85 ) SCHOOL COUNCIL CHAIRMAN
As the recently appointed 20th Chairman of Scotch College School Council , it is a great honour and privilege to be elected to serve the school .
Scotch holds a special place in my heart , in that it provided me with the good fortune of a well-rounded education and helped cultivate and instil the importance of self-responsibility , enterprise and service in building a better society . This has fostered a desire to give back in what capacity I can , and I ’ m greatly looking forward to working with Council , the school , and the wider Scotch Family , in advancing the College for current and future generations of Scotch boys .
In succeeding Mr Alex Sloan (’ 71 ) as Chair , I want to thank him on behalf of the Scotch Family for his leadership over the last three years , and for the gracious and faithful manner in which he led the College .
As has been previously communicated in recent editions of this magazine , we are currently working on a new integrated strategic plan for the school . This is very much evolutionary , rather than revolutionary ,
and marks the latest chapter of our shared endeavours to make Scotch an even better school , under our Principal , Dr Scott Marsh .
A particular area to which the Principal and Council are giving thoughtful consideration is how we not only provide a first-class academic education , but build character and provide a more meaningful vison of humanity in a society increasingly suffering from a crisis of meaning , loneliness and mental health problems .
At times , one could be forgiven for thinking the purpose of today ’ s school education is to get a high ATAR . Now , academic success is obviously important ; after all , learning is at our core . However , with the focus on league tables , school rankings , final tests and the ATAR which expires on use , many scholars are now questioning the extent to which these changes have restricted or narrowed the greater purposes of school education , and turned schools into places of performance rather than places of formation .
