EDITOR GREAT SCOT
In the last few editions of Great Scot , we focused on what constitutes the Scotch Family , how we welcome people into our community and how we envisage a bright future .
It seemed like a natural progression to now focus on how we position ourselves outside of our school gates . Be it on the slopes of Mount Buller or at Tiwi College , be it during the many experiential learning opportunities or school camps , be it Old Scotch Boys meeting in London or Singapore , be it on our new online social media channels or our presence in rural Victoria , Scotch College has many touchpoints that not only help to represent our values to different communities , but also provide opportunities for our students , staff and wider members to represent the school and engage in significant ways to shaping a better world .
Many examples of these golden opportunities are presented to you at the forefront of this edition in the Features section , and as Dr Scott Marsh underlines , the Scotch Family plays a vital role throughout these opportunities , in contributing to ‘ the lives of others and [ inspiring ] future generations ’.
To this effect , you will no doubt notice a Special News section announcing the school ’ s concrete steps in establishing a world-class Outdoor Education Program , with stunning photos of the newly acquired 175 acre facility in Mallacoota , where opportunities for experiential learning will help forge character and personal growth , notably with a ‘ focus on community service , fostering a sense of cooperation and shared responsibility for the environment ’, as mentioned by Jarrid Bartle , Head of Outdoor Education .
This flagship outside of our comfortable abode in Hawthorn will certainly offer our Year 9s occasions to be ‘ on the road ’ and open to a different style of learning , in both content and delivery . Moreover , the flame which is ignited during our students ’ formative years often allows them to pursue their passions and travel the world during their adult life , such as Ethan Flemming (’ 18 ), whose mother recounts his ongoing tour of Europe ‘ in some of the world ’ s most iconic venues ’ as part of the Choir of Trinity College , which shares strong ties with Scotch College .
In addition to the numerous events that took place this year , such as the Art and Drama Study Tour to New York , in these pages , Tim Byrnes , Dean of Boarding , is already inviting Scotch families and alumni from rural Victoria to ‘ hear about Scotch boarding and our recent developments ’ at many functions taking place in 2024 .
There is no denying the vital role played by OSCA in facilitating reunions of Old Scotch Boys interstate and overseas , which is why the views of OSCA Executive Director Scott Montgomery (’ 85 ) on these precious opportunities are encompassed within the Features section of this magazine . Moreover , OSCA President Stephen Webster (’ 73 ) also underlines how OSCA supports our Young Old Boys ( YOBs ) to transition and help shape their careers through networking events .
I also note in the ‘ What They ’ re Doing Now ’ section , how a Scotch education has often led many to careers that have taken them to different corners of the world , such as Dr Lindsay Trapnell (’ 64 ) who is currently the Head of the Department of Agricultural Sciences at the Zambian Open University , or Peter Hayman (’ 73 ) who has lived in America as a stockbroker or consultant since 1987 .
I hope that we have captured in this edition how central the exploration of land and cultures is , to uncovering new insights and a sense of wonder and discovery . Scotch College endeavours to continue developing the curious mind with notably the Mallacoota opportunities offered to every single student from 2027 . Now , more than ever , the roads offered to our Scotch boys , through their first-class education , are expanding and varied , enabling each student to find the right path for himself along the way .
