orienteering, where we retained the Roger Slade Memorial Trophy ahead
of Camberwell Grammar School and Trinity Grammar School. Scotch
won all divisions except D grade, with Lachlan Tingate (Year 12) finishing
first in A grade. Squash fielded three teams in the first division of the
schools’ competition. Our Cardinal team performed best, with five wins
and one loss, coming out eventual winners.
The 1st Sailing team had another standout season, with a strong
performance at the Victorian School Team Sailing Championships. After
winning seven of their 11 races on day one of the event, the boys backed
this up by finishing an impressive third in the finals, qualifying for the
nationals. Captain William Pratt and Vice Captain Henry Johnston (both
Year 12) showed great skill in leading the team. The cycling team finished
a creditable fourth in the Victorian Interschool Series schools competition.
Our best performer was Captain Joaquin Cross (Year 12), who continually
finished in the top 10 in a range of events in the senior male A division.
Lawn bowls fielded five teams in the 32-team restructured firsts
competition. Our A team performed best, finishing fifth in the APS
competition and third in the combined APS/AGS finals competition.
Our 1st Touch team started the season positively with some good
performances, including an action-packed draw against Caulfield
Grammar and a comprehensive 8-0 victory against Trinity Grammar,
The team ultimately finished fifth.
The Old Scotch athletics program went from strength to strength
this year, with boys competing regularly in the Athletics Victoria Shield
competition and also shining in the Junior Victorian Championships. Six
boys qualified for the nationals, including Ronghao Chen (Year 8), who
won the under 14 100m and was second in the 200m, and Cameron
Mackenzie (Year 11) who achieved third in the under 18 pole vault. Fred
Leeton (Year 9), Jean-Philippe Soulie (Year 10), Jack Polkinghorne and
Sebastian Brasington (both Year 11) also qualified for the nationals in their
events. All these performances bode well for the APS athletics season.
Eight Scotch boys were selected in APS representative teams to
compete against the AGS. This included three captains of teams, which is
an amazing achievement by any school. Our APS representatives were:
Badminton: Leo Li (Captain), Doric Tu (Year 11)
Cricket: Will Lovell (Captain)
Table Tennis: Noah Philp, Luis Chan (Year 10)
Tennis: Max Sinclair (Captain), William Patton (Year 12)
Volleyball: Toby Argent (Year 11)
While it has certainly been a season to celebrate, it is fair to say that at
Scotch we move on quickly from our successes. The boys and staff have
already turned their attention to their winter pursuits.
Huge thanks go to all those involved with our summer sports
programs. Without the support of so many committed TICs, coaches,
managers and, most importantly, our boys, we would struggle to achieve
the great heights of success of 2018/19 at senior level.
The reality is that most of our program is at non-firsts level, and I am
proud of the engagement of our boys and the culture of best effort they
display, no matter what the scoreboard reads. We certainly do not have
a perfect program, but we have all worked together and showed much
needed flexibility to ensure the boys have opportunities to play. Finally, our
Grounds staff and Maintenance team deserve particular mention. We are
extremely fortunate to have such wonderful facilities, which allow our boys
to participate in such good conditions.
