A SCHOLARSHIP HONOURING
OUR FINEST SON — A TRULY
GREAT AUSTRALIAN
A fitting tribute to a man so closely entwined with Scotch’s values.
One hundred years after he led the
Australian Corps to decisive victories
in 1918, Sir John Monash’s old School,
Scotch College – which he always loved
and respected for the excellent education
it afforded him – has commissioned a
scholarship bearing his name. In so doing,
the School is honouring the man who
shaped the course of Australian history
as no other. He is our finest Old Scotch
Collegian.
While palpable reminders of Monash
abound at Scotch – Monash Drive,
Monash House, the foundation stone of
Memorial Hall, and the Monash Gates
through which Scotch boys pass every
school day – there is, perhaps, no more
fitting tribute to a man so closely entwined
with Scotch’s values than to commemorate
his remarkable achievements through the
General Sir John Monash Scholarship.
In October 2017 the Scotch Family
joined together in a live campaign to raise
over $1M in 24 hours to fund Scotch’s
first Indigenous perpetual scholarship
— the Tony Briggs (’85) Indigenous
Scholarship. Using the same 24 hour
platform, we will again look to the Scotch
Family to unite forces in a live campaign
to create the perpetual General Sir John
Monash Scholarship.
The scholarship will honour the life,
service and achievements of Scotch’s
greatest son, doing justice to the qualities
he upheld throughout his life.
Sir John Monash was a passionate
believer in the power of education. This
endowed scholarship recognises that belief
and his love of his old School. Fittingly, it
will benefit generations of Scotch boys.
Scotch is seeking to raise an initial
capital fund of $750,000 to endow in
perpetuity one full academic scholarship.
Donations to the Scotch College
Foundation Scholarship Fund will be
tax deductible.
For just one day, on Thursday 8
August, every dollar donated by members
of the Scotch Family will be quadrupled
through the generous matching of
supporters from the Scotch Family. Gifts
of every size will make a real difference.
In addition to gifts made within the 24
hour appeal, gifts can be made prior to
8 August by returning the donation form
enclosed with this edition of Great Scot to
the Scotch College Development Office,
and we will process them as part of the 24
hour campaign. Please note that gifts must
‘Equip yourself for life, not solely for
your own benefit but for the benefit
of the whole community.’
