STUDENT IN THE QUAD ; SCENE IN THE QUAD AFTER THE INSTALLATION
The proceedings continued with the Call to Worship , Prayer of Approach , Old Testament Reading : Psalm 127 , New Testament Reading : Romans 8 : 24-32 , interspersed with the singing of two Hymns : All People that on Earth do Dwell and Praise to the Lord Almighty .
Rev . Doug Campbell then addressed the audience , using the quote from Psalm 127 , ‘ Unless the Lord builds the house , the builders labour in vain ’, to remind everyone of the importance of living life to the full , but to avoid inertia and to find balance in our approach to work with the help of God . He even joked to Dr Scott Marsh that he was ‘ not Superman ’ and could rely on the whole Scotch Family to support him in his endeavours .
Mr Alex Sloan then proceeded to share his vision of the ‘ foundations in Scottish Enlightenment ’ that have been shared by all previous Principals : respect , devotion , vision and dedication , underlying the ‘ drive , perseverance , courage and dedication ’ required to be a school principal in today ’ s society . ( See the Chairman ’ s article on pages 2 and 3 .)
After the Prayer of Installation , the Aaronic Blessing and Hand of Recognition , it was time for the Torch Ceremony . James Gregory ( Year 7 ), who extinguished the torch last year during Mr Tom Batty ’ s Farewell Assembly , was charged with lighting it before handing it over to William Batchelor and Aiden Richards ( both Year 6 ) who then invited Dr Marsh to accept the torch as 10th Principal of the school . Dion Whitfield , School Captain 2023 and Thomas Kluckow , School Vice Captain 2023 , then returned the flame to its stand .
Dr Scott Marsh next came to the lectern to officially address the Scotch community for the first time . In response to Rev . Campbell ’ s earlier ‘ Superman ’ comment , Dr Marsh quipped that even though he wore a red cape , he knew he was not Superman !. In all humility and in recognising the outstanding achievements of all previous Principals of Scotch College , Dr Marsh mentioned how an ‘ installation service points us at those who came before ’ and therefore is ‘ as much about their leadership as welcoming the 10th Principal ’.
Dr Marsh said that while it was a great privilege to work in schools , being an educator remains complex . The concept of the Scotch Family was mentioned many times before Dr Marsh finished with a reference to the Burning Bush which not only is represented with a sculpture , just outside Memorial Hall at the southern end of the Principal ’ s Walk but also in the Old Testament ' s Book of Exodus , symbolising God ’ s presence and his calling to Moses . In that vein , Dr Scott Marsh concluded that he was committed to lead Scotch College with humility , and with God ' s help .
After the closing hymn , Be Thou my Vision , and the Benediction , morning tea was served in the Quad , during which many among the community , finally had the opportunity to meet the new Principal and his family in person .
The organist at the service was Mr David Brown ; the piper was Teddy Symons ( Year 10 ) and the drummer was Teddy ’ s brother , Occy Symons ( Year 9 ).
