CANBERRA 2022 CAMP – ‘ A PHENOMENAL EXPERIENCE ’
YEAR 6 BOYS REFLECT ON THEIR SCHOOL CAMP TRIP TO CANBERRA – 6 TO 9 JUNE
VISITING FAMOUS SITES
During our school camp trip to Canberra , we visited many famous sites which included Parliament House . This was one of the highlights during our trip to Canberra . One of the many remarkable things we got to experience while in Parliament House was passing a bill . During our simulation of passing a bill , we had certain people play different roles . One boy was Prime Minister , while others were Deputy Prime Minister , Speaker , Leader of the Opposition , Shadow Ministers , government backbenchers , opposition backbenchers and the Serjeant-at-Arms . One of the most significant items in the House of Representatives is the Mace , the tip of which always points towards the government side . In the end we got to act out the whole process of passing a bill . WILLIAM NGUYEN and YUSUF MOHAMMED
PARLIAMENT HOUSE
This experience was like no other . The boys got to have a try at what being in parliament is really like . It was exciting and fun as we debated against each other . The topic was ‘ Should the government make Wi-Fi free on public transport ?’ The debate was intense , with many good points . We pretended that we were actually in the House of Representatives . We learned how a bill is passed and how to address the speaker . WINSTON CHEN and JAMES LUK
THE MUSEUM OF AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRACY AT PARLIAMENT HOUSE
We walked into the lavish , rich green room , staring at the black rod . Questions emerged about our government ’ s complex history . We sat on kingly furniture , which once held politicians of great status . There , equidistant from both sides of the house , was a decades-old throne , decorated with the British coat of arms . This emblem contained a majestic unicorn and a regal lion . We were captivated by the history and beauty bound in this room ; It truly was a wonderful experience ! THOMAS DOAN and AARON SHEN
VISITING CANBERRA
Canberra was a great experience for all of the Year 6 boys . One of the key experiences was touring the inside of Parliament House . Parliament House taught us how the inside of the Senate and the House of Representatives work . After seeing the Upper and Lower Houses in person , we practised debating against each other . Many of us sat on the government benches , some sat with the opposition , and a couple sat as individuals . We both sat on the opposition side , and we both agreed that we put up a good argument , and rejected the new bill that debated the value of free Wi-Fi on public transport . Overall , Parliament House was a joyful experience that we will both remember . KEVIN SUI and JUN GARDINER
PRIME MINISTER FOR A DAY
The definite highlight of my Canberra was the tour of Parliament House . When we entered , I was immediately shocked at the sheer size of it . After strict airport security-like checks we entered the building . The architecture was neo-Greek with floor to ceiling . After ascending a marble staircase we got to the maze-like second floor . We journeyed through to a room where we found the golden mace situated on the table , which is a symbol of order . We had to pick a
