to have a quick chat or share a last drink and best wishes with both Tom and Lee , James Nguyen (’ 12 ), known as jqn ( his poet moniker ), took to the stage to perform a poem he wrote as a tribute to Tom , followed by staff member Michael Waugh , accompanied by guitarist Jacob McGuffie , who sang his song For a Moment .
During the evening , many gifts were offered to Tom and Lee : a painting by Angela Kani George depicting the Piltati rock holes of the Pitjantjatjara country , a large totem pole crafted in the Tiwi Islands and a photo-book of Tom ’ s 14 years at the School , all signs of the affection and gratitude expressed to the Battys over the years , culminating in these last few weeks .
And finally , Tom took to the stage to thank everyone in attendance and beyond , paying particular tribute to the staff , teaching and non-teaching , and thanking all those who had worked hard to make the evening so enjoyable .
After a few final conversations , with the Scotch community already reminiscing about the Batty years , and with perhaps a hint of melancholy , time had come to say farewell and for guests to leave the glorious Memorial Hall . There were smiles all around , similar in spirit to Tom ’ s contagious smile , imprinted in our collective memory .
