After many COVID-related postponements , the Old Scotch Bowls Club was able to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the club with a gala luncheon in the Boykett Room of the Cardinal Pavilion on Sunday 6 March .
The day was carefully planned to highlight the history of the club and pay tribute to the members who founded it back in December 1970 , as well as to those members who during the next 50 years contributed to its growth .
The Old Scotch Bowls Club was founded by a committee meeting in December 1970 , at which a past Vice Principal of Scotch , Henry ( Bosh ) Bowden ( SC 1901-07 ) was appointed foundation President , and Keith McKinley Wilson ( SC 1921-27 ) became foundation Secretary when the club became an affiliated club of OSCA .
The aim of the newly-formed club was to ‘ gather old school mates together for friendly games on the greens and renew old friendships ’.
At the 50th anniversary luncheon a continuous slide show was shown on the big screen of people , bowls games and tournaments over many years , which brought back many happy memories to the members present , some of whom have been members of the club for many decades .
There were two important guest speakers at the anniversary lunch . Club member Jim Donaldson , who is also the club ’ s historian , spoke passionately about the rich history of the club , how it has maintained connection with the School , and the great friendships and camaraderie amongst the members of the Scotch Family who enjoy lawn bowls .
OSCA President Andrew Wilson (’ 78 ) spoke about the role that OSCA and all its affiliated clubs play in the overall connection with the School , through a diverse range of sporting and other activities .
The luncheon was voted a great success and enjoyed by all in attendance . On 2 February , the bowls club was victorious in its annual competition against the historic private West Brighton Club , which was established in 1881 .
For this year ’ s tournament , our club fielded a very strong team of 20 bowlers , and I am delighted to say that all four of our teams won their rinks and we won back the coveted Scighton Trophy .
The successful morning ’ s bowling was followed by an excellent lunch in the historic clubhouse , where the West Brighton Club members made Old Scotch feel very welcome .
Our club has vacancies for men and women who play bowls and would like to join us . We also warmly welcome non-bowlers who wish to learn to bowl and enjoy the friendship and fellowship of other members of the Scotch Family . Free beginners ’ classes are available .
