Post-Scotch , COLIN YOUNG (’ 68 ) gained a Bachelor of Economics ( Honours ) and an MBA from Monash University , then qualified as a CPA and Tax Agent .
Spending 40 years in human resources consulting , Colin ran a boutique HR firm , which solved a wide variety of difficult HR problems for government and multinational clients .
Colin and his wife Ros have one son , ANDREW (’ 09 ), working at a big four consulting firm ; and two daughters , Gwen and Hayley , both commercial lawyers with top-tier law firms . The couple has a farm in north-east Victoria , producing prime Dorper lambs and Angus cattle .
Colin was selected in the 1988 Australian biathlon ( cross-country racing and rifle shooting ) team competing in Europe ; and was Australian biathlon champion in his age group for several years .
A keen military vehicle enthusiast , Colin has a growing collection of restored World War II and Vietnam vehicles , used on Anzac Day and at other public events . Among his other leisure activities are barefoot waterskiing ( one foot , backwards , beach start / finish ), downhill skiing and French sauternes .
1970s
Since the late 1990s , DAVID LIPSHUT (’ 72 ) has worked on reforming electricity and gas markets across Australia and internationally . Working for himself since 1999 ( after 10 years at the consulting firm , Accenture ), David has contracted to governments , regulators and industry participants . Among his interesting projects
have been helping to set up a process through which electricity customers can choose their retailer ; and he managed the project to reconnect gas to Victoria after the Longford explosion .
He is currently helping a large utility in Asia as it prepares for a major restructuring that will see its distribution and retail businesses separated , while it simultaneously faces the challenge of meeting a government policy to greatly increase the penetration of renewable energy by 2025 .
David and his wife Jan have two daughters and four grandchildren , and he splits his time between an apartment in Malvern East and a house on the Thirteenth Beach Golf Course outside Barwon Heads , where he and Jan have happily spent their time during lockdowns .
MICHAEL NICHOLSON (’ 72 ) is an artist and a filmmaker , who claims to be a three-time winner of the sack race in the Junior School , and was Editor of Satura in his final Scotch year . Mike , who was inspired at school by great art teachers , OSCAR HELMS (’ 27 ) and FRANK PATON (‘ 24 ), has been planning an exhibition of his artwork which has twice been thwarted by COVID restrictions . However it will now open at the Stables Space in the Meat Market , North Melbourne , on 2 December and run for 12 days . The delay has given Mike plenty of time to create new works . Mike has also been active with his filmmaking , producing a film on the 2021 Australian Rowing Championships , held in Tasmania , where Victoria reasserted itself as a power on the Australian rowing landscape : https :// vimeo . com / 545847675 .
Mike is very proud of his daughter , Melissa , who is following in his footsteps . She is currently studying for a Bachelor of Media and Filmmaking at Collarts in Melbourne .
1980s
For more than 30 years , ANDREW HUGHES (’ 86 ) has worked in commercial real estate , working for a number of Australia ’ s leading agencies and real estate investment trusts . Andrew is currently Associate Director-Property Manager – CBD for Teska Carson Real Estate . Prior to that he was State Property Manager Victoria , for Charter Hall Limited .
Andrew keeps in touch with a number of friends who go back as far as sub-primary days , who have helped him celebrate several milestones over the journey since leaving Scotch .
Andrew and his wife Liz have three children – daughters Emily and Samantha and son , Angus . Pre-COVID , Andrew enjoyed rowing out of the Scotch boatshed , and he competed in a number of regattas , including the Head of the Yarra . He now enjoys mountain bike riding with Angus , in the You Yangs , Mt Buller and elsewhere . ‘ The only downside of this sport is when you come off the bike ,’ he says . ‘ It takes a while for old bones to mend .’
The Hume brothers , CHRIS (’ 85 ), RICHARD (’ 86 ) and JONATHAN (’ 89 ) were all at Scotch on Saturday 1 May to watch Scotch ’ s Year 10A footballers play Caulfield Grammar School on the Main Oval . Playing for Scotch was Richard ’ s son , Charlie , and taking the field for Caulfield was Jonathan ’ s son , Ned . Scotch emerged as victors , and the brothers , together with Chris ’ young son ,
