JAXSON’ S

JOURNEY: 5-year-old Corbin boy spends past two months battling HSP

What started as a random pain in his foot has snowballed into a trip to the ER, an overnight stay at the hospital, trips up to Lexington, and weekly visits to the pediatrician for my 5-yearold son.
On a Saturday afternoon in February, I was helping Jaxson put on his shoe when he screamed out in pain for reasons unknown to me or my wife Carmen.
He hadn’ t injured his foot or even bruised it as far as we knew, but putting on his shoe that day was hurting him.
However, once his shoe was on, he walked and ran around like normal for the next 24 hours. As someone who is Autistic and has the occasional temper tantrum, we thought he was perhaps being a little dramatic and we didn’ t really think much about the situation after that.
That Sunday evening, though, he was complaining about the pain once again and we went back to our state of confusion.
He got through his day of school on Monday, and we could tell that whatever it was was still hurting him. Furthermore, there were now a few red dots starting to appear on not only his ailing foot but also the other foot as well.
So Carmen took him to an urgent treatment center to maybe get some x-rays and hopefully get some answers.
When we got the results, they basically told us it was unclear if it was any type of fracture or not, so they went ahead and scheduled Jaxson a visit with a local podiatrist. They also gave him a boot to wear until we could figure out what was wrong.
After meeting with the podiatrist, he also couldn’ t see anything for certain from the x-rays. So he suggested that Jaxson wear shoes that were more supportive of his feet and to try and rest as much as possible for the next several weeks. And if it wasn’ t any better, then they would do an MRI.
