how to use
this toolkit
WHO IS THIS FOR?
This toolkit is for groups who work with high school-aged
youth, from clubs or groups within a school setting, like
a Student Nutrition Advisory Board, to organizations
working with youth in a broader community. It’s intended
for facilitators (adult or youth) who will lead discussions
and activities that spark conversation and action around
good food, and especially to dig into the role the Good
Food Purchasing Program (GFPP) can play in creating a
food system that protects workers, animals, and the planet.
GOALS
The activities and lessons in this toolkit are meant to educate
and engage youth around issues involving food including
some obvious connections to health, nutrition, and
sustainability, but also to what good food can—and should—
do to protect the workers along the food chain, to ensure
animals are treated humanely, and to invest community
resources in the local businesses in our communities. This
toolkit works well for those who are looking for ways to
bring high-school aged youth into advocacy and decision-
making around what food is purchased and served by the
very institutions that serve them, whether that is getting
GFPP adopted by the school district, helping define and
communicate about community priorities to elected
leaders, or pushing for accountability and transparency
throughout the implementation of GFPP to make sure that
leaders are living up to their commitments and values.
Using this toolkit will help youth connect the dots around
the food system, showing how it impacts them and the
world around them, and how they, in turn, can impact the
food system.
