Shubham Jaglan is an Indian amateur golfer who won the Junior World Golf Championships in 2015. Jaglan is also World Record holder, 9 under in Classic Junior Open, 2012 and is recipient of the “NDTV – Emerging Player” and “Margdarshan” awards. GP: What prompted you to take up the sport of golf? SJ: It was my grandfather. I come from a small village called Israna, from a wrestling family. My grandfather was probably fed up with so many wrestlers, so he wanted me to try something else. Luckily at right around that time, that ‘something else’ was golf as an NRI had opened a golf academy there. That’s how I started off. GP: How do you manage your time between golf and studies? SJ: The Laxman Public School, where I study, has helped a lot, all thanks to the Golf Foundation. I’ve been a part of the Golf Foundation and they were the ones who got me into Laxman Public School. All of my teachers and friends are very helpful and I know I have to study because I feel my education is just like a huge stepping stone towards my goal. GP: What are your future plans? SJ: I first plan to finish my school education then get into a US college and then go on to the PGA TOUR. But most importantly, I plan to rise in the World Amateur Rankings and hopefully become number one before turning professional. GP: What’s in your bag? • Wedge: Ping Glide 2.0 (46 degrees till 58 degrees) • Balls: Titleist Pro v1/v1x depending on where I’m playing (windy-v1/wet or long-v1x) • Irons: Ping iBlade 9 iron - 5 iron • Hybrid: Ping G400 19 and 22 degrees • Putter: Ping Anser 2 Vault • Driver: Ping G400 (9 degrees) GP: How has golf helped you in your day-to-day life? SJ: Golf has made me a better student and a healthier boy. It has helped me understand the importance of exercising and nutrition. But most importantly, it has made me more disciplined. GP: Your advice to other junior golfers. SJ: Just play the game with passion and if you’re serious about it, don’t just go mad and think you’ll be the next Tiger Woods overnight. It all takes time. Focus on fitness, nutrition and most importantly, your body. Always just do what your body demands. The most common mistake I see people make, is play whichever tournament that’s taking place. Plan out your schedule, play the events that will help you and if you’re tired, you better take a break. That’s why these top pros take breaks between events. Listen to your body and enjoy!
