Senior Winter Camp 2014
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a
sound mind. 2 Tim 1v7
What a tremendous blessing to enter into Camp with this verse from
Timothy, which is especially appropriate to the lives of young people these days.
Using the Old Testament accounts of David and his men gathered in the
cave Adullam, the ministry at this Camp developed and grew just like the
dysfunctional men who first gathered in the cave, and then stayed, having found their
Captain. It was such a blessing to watch as the young people were able to find Jesus
as their Lord and Captain. Leaving the Debts, Doubts, Distress and Discontentment
of the world behind, we saw campers grow in confidence in their Captain, Jesus and
how they could love Him, grow in His strength and power, and have a sound mind –
living in peace while surrounded by a world of madness.
War Games! Put simply, this is a good description of some of the workshops
the campers had to endure. Shot at, shocked and snared, the first workshop rudely
took the campers out of their comfort zone and showed them the meaning of fear.
Not to worry, the counsellors are all trained "care-givers" and we had it all in hand!
Besides, not one of the campers was damaged (at least not too seriously – just
kidding!) and many practical lessons were learnt.
We saw the meaning of God's great love
when one of the counsellors, Zulu (Craig Geel),
took the punishment on behalf of those who had
not made the grade. Zulu's sacrifice in the face
of painful judgement (20 paint balls at point
blank range) will not be soon forgotten.
