TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION IN THE LEGAL SECTOR IBERIA
Winner
Banco Santander España
Led by Carmen Fradejas Ufano, Legal Director of Innovation and Payment Service
The objective of the innovation and payment services legal department is to provide legal support to certain business
teams, specially the innovation & digital department and product development department. The use of technology is now
inherent to the banking sector and the legal team has to provide support in relation to products such as “ONE PAY FX”, “WE
TRADE” or “APPLE PAY”. Using this technology means a traditional and physical card becomes a token. Santander’s leading
position in mobile payments has resulted in initiatives such as Fitbit Pay, the implementation of which has brought new legal
challenges. Finally the use of blockchain technology allows the bank to process payment orders faster has been another
key focus for the legal team.
