In April 2014 Go Connect organised one of the biggest cultural events that took place in Hull University campus, with almost 1000 attending it. The Culture festival was organised throughout 3 days, each day providing 2 different activities for students as well as staff members. All 6 events were a success.
The first day of the festival started with a flag parade across the campus, having 2 short performances in front of the Students' Union and the Brynor Jones Library. This event was attended by Go Connect volunteers and International Office staff members, as well International Student groups representing their nations. The day ended with a Language Bite session in Russian which was a free workshop provided in collaboration with the Institute for Languages, Linguistics & Culture. This workshop is designed to encourage students to not only learn about another culture but also pick up a new language whilst at university.
The second day began with a large culture bazaar on the main campus in front of the Brynor Jones library, where different student groups came together to showcase their culture and traditions through food, clothing, music or decorative objects. The Culture Bazaar was the first of it's kind at Hull University and was attend by several hundred people. Towards the end of the program there was a film screening of a documentary on Australian Aboriginal Culture hosted by the International Office.
The last day of the Culture Festival had a career session dedicated for students who wished to improve their career prospects and interview skills with a Global Perspective. The end of the festival was celebrated with a Photography Exhibition organised by Hull University Photography Society. The purpose of this exhibition was to present various cultures from different angles, allowing participants to think of the multiple cultural differences and their beauty. This event was attended by approximately 100 students, also managing to raise money for British Red Cross.
The Culture Festival was a successful attempt to raise cultural awareness in campus. Over 10.000 people visited the official media pages of Go Connect to view the Cultural content throughout the 3 days of the event. Next year the event promises to be bigger and better involving more international students.
