ABOUT
EQUAL PAY
GMB takes Avery Care Homes
to court with six-year claim
G
MB is suing Avery Care Homes
in the High Court for sex
discrimination. The equal pay
claim for our women members is
for up to six years’ back-pay. If you have
worked at any of the Avery Care Homes listed
below in the last six years, you should email
[email protected] at once!
GMB has instructed solicitors to start legal
proceedings to win equal pay for the first 75
women GMB members employed by Avery
Healthcare Limited. These women do work of
the same value as that of male employees,
but are paid less.
Justin Bowden is GMB’s national officer
representing members working in
the care sector. He said: “The level of sex
discrimination displayed by the Avery

Healthcare Group towards the GMB
women members they employ is
breathtaking. GMB is suing to try and win
up to six years’ back-pay for these
members in the High Court.
“These GMB members carry out the
most important role Avery has, caring for
vulnerable residents. Care staff do a vital
and sometimes difficult job under huge
pressure, giving the best possible care.”
Paying someone less for the job they do
based on their sex was outlawed in Britain in
1970. Incredibly, 46 years after the Equal Pay
Act was passed, Avery Healthcare is paying
women carers and other staff hundreds of
pounds a year less than men in similar jobs.
It’s 2016 and it’s time companies like Avery
joined us in the 21st century.
