GMAQ - Golf Management Australia Queensland Spring 2017 | Page 3
NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
BY SCOTT WAGSTAFF
The last few months have seen some great
weather and I trust that you and your
club are making the most of the beautiful
Queensland winter months. We have also
seen an incredible major golf season in
2017, where interestingly all four winners
had six letters in both their first and last
names. The great news for Australians
is that two of them are venturing down
under this summer so we will get a
first hand look at Sergio Garcia (PGA
Championship) and Jordan Speith (Emirates
Australian Open).
At the most recent GMAQ day at Gailes,
PGA’s Broc Greenhalgh talked through the
PGA Championship and it was exciting to
hear the news that not only Sergio will be
in the field but there is a likelihood that at
least another one or two headline players
will be in the field. I am excited about this
year’s Championship and I would think
there is a huge chance this will be the best
ever at Royal Pines, and possibly one of the
best ever if a few things come off for the
PGA.
It’s always fascinating when it comes
to Rules dramas and having a Rules
background, I probably take more notice
than anyone when a Rules Official comes
onto the scene. Fortunately, I stayed up
to watch the last round of The Open live
and the incredible scenes at Royal Birkdale
on the 13th hole were fascinating to
watch. Yes, it took ages to get the ruling
done but it was a challenging situation for
everyone there. Being a great Rules Official
is more about management of the difficult
situations rather than just their knowledge
of the rules. This was illustrated by the
one and only John “JP” Paramore who is
probably the best in the business. When he
came onto the scene there was a calmness
that it was in good hands and everything
was going to be OK. JP has been out to a
few Australian Opens over the years and I
think as managers we can learn a lot about
managing people by watching JP in action.
I have been listening in to my favourite new
show “Inside the Ropes” produced by Golf
Australia lately. I have mentioned the show
to a few friends and they are now also
hooked. Credit to Golf Australia for this
fantastic production. I think what has made
it so interesting is the honest opinions,
the incredible interviews with some great
Australians and it’s just a great way to
stay in touch with what is happening in
the world of golf when we are all so busy.
I have found my longer trips in the car
now to be times I look forward to when I
have an episode to listen to. If you haven’t
listened to Ian Baker Finch’s interview in
the leadup to the Open at Birkdale then I
sincerely hope you take the time to do so.
